Can I ask the dutch folk what is with that thing where you put sweets in peoples shoes near Christmas? That's Sinterklaas! Sinterklaas is a children's holiday. From december 1st to the 4th, you set your shoe near the fireplace and get little treats that are just leading towards the big day on December 5th when you get your big presents.

The setting you shoe part stems back from the time when houses didn't have central heating yet. It was a trick by parents to get their kids to set their shoes near the fireplace to make sure their shoes would dry from the wet or snowy weather outside, so that their shoes would be dry the next day.
